City Montessori School (CMS), Lucknow, UP with over 50,000 students enrolled in 2015 is the world’s largest cluster of schools within a city by student strength. CMS is a co-educational English medium school up to the undergraduate level, affiliated to the ICSE Board. Set up by Dr Jagdish Gandhi (75) and his wife Bharti in 1959 with five pupils in rented premises with a borrowed capital of Rs 300, CMS now has over 1,000 classrooms, 3,700 computers and an army of 3,800 staff members including teachers, support staff, electricians and carpenters, spread over 20 campuses across the city. The school is well-known for its results and international exchange programmes. In 2002, CMS was awarded the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education, the first school in the world to be honoured with it.
