After amalgamating several smaller units, the New Horsed Cavalry Regiment came into being on Oct 1, 1953 and was renamed 61 Cavalry in January 1954. 61 Cavalry Regiment is the largest non-ceremonial horse-mounted Cavalry unit. Although 61 Cavalry is visible mostly at ceremonial events like Republic Day parade, it can be used for internal security. The regiment has produced many polo players and ace riders.
