The Coca-Cola India Foundation, Anandana created and handed over a water conservation project to the residents of Sawai Madhopur to help elevate dwindling water levels and enhance agricultural productivity

The residents of Sawai Madhopur, a city and municipal corporation in colourful Rajasthan, celebrated the historic ‘Sawai Madhopur Utsav’ with great aplomb this year. They had even more reason to be joyous because no longer does the onset of summer mean depleting water levels, reduced productivity and less money to feed their families.

Sawai Madhopur , home to the Ranthambore National Park, Trinetra temple and most interestingly – guavas, had for years been reeling under the unrelenting heat of the summer sun, which rapidly depleted water levels in villages. These would often go down below 50 meters, having a profound impact on agricultural productivity.

In its continued endeavour to replenish groundwater and economically empower communities, The Coca-Cola India Foundation (Anandana) along with its implementing partner Action for Food Production (AFPRO), constructed and handed over a completed water conservation project consisting of 2 earthen dams, 22 farm ponds, renovation of 2 existing dams, 34 well recharge structures to the community of Sawai Madhopur.

Coca-Cola India’s initiative will now also improve the water use efficiency, groundwater recharge and strengthening eco-system services in the region. This watershed project spread over 300 hectares benefits around 2,500 households and over 10,000 individuals in the 4 villages of Bhadlav, Padli, Ulliyana and Kundera in the Sawai Madhopur district. In its 1st year, the water conservation structure is piped to aid in groundwater table increase of 10-15 meters.

Sawai Madhopur, a little-known municipal corporation in the heart of Rajasthan, now boasts of its own identity and economic independence which has been brought on through enhanced productivity, water and soil conservation, and socio-economic elevation.  As water flows freely through their land, Sawai Madhopur is celebrating again.
