Madan Gopal Kohli (72) of Keshav Puram, Delhi is a passionate gardener who tends his plants with utmost care. His 50-sq ft terrace garden has 20,000 plants in plastic bags, empty cement sacks, ice cream cups (!), vegetable baskets, mushroom tubs and more... Surprisingly, he grows flowers and fruits which need alpine conditions in the scorching Delhi heat! He has grown strawberries, peaches, plums, black grapes when temperatures ranged around 45 degree Celsius! Ditto for delicate flowers like saffron, tulips, sweet William, calendula... He gets visits regularly from children and teachers alike, climbing his rickety staircase just to see the explosion of colours! Every first week of March, for the past 22 years, he organises a flower show for which even VVIPs show up.
