Dr Srinath Thakur, Principal of SDM College of Dental Sciences, Sattur, Dharwad, Karnataka planted a wild cactus, Cereus Peruvians, in the campus on August 15, 2002. Called the world’s tallest home-grown cactus by students and professors, it had grown 110 ft high by June 30, 2015. The plant has no leaves with tuft of spines present on the ridges produces white, funnel-shaped flowers that are 20 cm long. The cactus flowers between March and October with maximum in September. The cactus which has several names like Peruvian Torch, Peruvian Apple is red in colour and edible.
