Coca-Cola India’s Support My School program had just concluded in 2017 once it had touched the milestone of 1000 schools. They were exploring ways to scale the program and change focus to recycling in keeping with global goals and priorities. Around the same time, American India Foundation (AIF) had just concluded
With the objective of reaching 1.1 million school children and community members, AIF’s Digital Equalizer strategized on the most effective and sustainable method to achieve this objective. The focus of this project was to engage students and communities using customized content delivered through the use of technology.
- Content: Messaging content was developed through a technical partner. After rigorous pilot testing, field testing, and legal vetting, content was finalized and made accessible to a country-wide student audience through nine languages. It was also modified into EDUSAT* modules for Haryana.
- Training of Trainers: 120 Master Trainers were first trained and then engaged to roll out the training and capacity building effort. Using a cascade model, these master trainers then trained 520 teachers and volunteers to deliver the message to students and communities. Sessions were conducted with students and community members followed by door to door activities, street plays, installation of demo units and rallies that were conducted with a view to spreading awareness in the community as well.
- Implementation Models: The delivery was executed through three models namely
- Direct Model: Through do-it yourself activities, demo-units, games, competitions, the trainers ensured that the student community received and executed recycling of PET waste
- Community Model: In Punjab, students and communities they belong to were involved in the mission.
- EDUSAT: Unique to Haryana, this process involved the government’s EDUSAT system through which a central relay center, based in Chandigarh, delivered suitably modified content to the ROTs (Receive only Terminals) located at the schools across the state.
- Outreach: Students and community members conducted rallies and door-to-door awareness drives and installation of demo units.
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Baseline and endline surveys conducted by independent consultants were useful in determining the impact of the project. Continuous monitoring through a Live dash-board, an online reporting system and database were developed and used.
There is nothing that provides as much social and economic benefit, to as many stakeholders, as strategic partnerships focused on social good. The content for the program was created by Sahas Zero Waste, a technical partner engaged to package the campaign messaging through ToT guides, student booklets, games, activities, competitions etc. The successful implementation of the campaign in 504 of the total 5223 schools was achieved through the support of SRF Foundation, Plan India and World Vision India, in a symbiotic effort to amplify the campaign’s messaging. Assessments to measure the efficacy at different stages of the project were conducted by evaluation experts Espiel Edge. Together, these partnerships represent a transformational collaboration in taking Mission Recycling to scale.
