Pathak School, Rajkot, Gujarat started a campaign for saving birds on Jan 10, 2015, involving 1,000 students and 150 teachers, who wrote 5,750 slogans in 5 hr. Each participant was told to write five slogans to protect and save the myriad birds that enhance nature’s beauty. They also took a pledge that they would not use plastic and glass coated threads for kite flying, urging their families and friends to do the same. The slogan writing contest was held five days before the festival to create maximum awareness.
Bird injuries and deaths multiply around Makarsankranti with children and adults flying kites using plastic and Chinese-made thread coated with glass. The birds get tangled in the strings and suffer grave injuries. Children, so immersed in chasing fallen kites, meet with serious accidents.
