104 Helicopter Squadron, raised 60 years ago, was inducted into the IAF with the American Sikorsky S-55 in 1954. The squadron was formed with the first five S-55 helicopters and took off in 1958. Since then, the IAF has used several helicopters including the Alouette III or Chetak, Alouette II or Cheetah and the Russian Mi4, Mi8, Mi17 IV and Mi 17 V5. The helicopters have even seen overseas operations as part of the UN Peacekeeping Missions in Somalia, Sierra Leone, Congo and Sudan. They have also been in action during Op Pawan in Sri Lanka. Back home, they have flown to and from the most inhospitable battle field, Siachen Glacier.
