The Sri Murugh Math, Chitradurga in Karnataka and its head Dr Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru are celebrating 25 years of the mass marriages movement pioneered by the Math. It was Dr Sharanaru who launched mass marriages – simple ceremonies with food provided by well-wishers of the Math – on June 23, 1991. Till 1995 it was an annual feature. Then it became a monthly event held on the fifth of every month. There is no priest, chanting or recitation of mantras at these mass marriages.
Initially, only the poor people came for the mass marriages, then the middle class and even the rich sought blessings at the Math. The Dalai Lama, Anna Hazare and other dignitaries have blessed the over 10,500 couples at these mass marriages, all of which are also registered at the Marriage Registration Office.
