With just three bogies and covering 13.68 km at a sluggish pace of 30 kmph, the Konch-Ait shuttle in Bundelkhand, UP is the shortest rail service route in the country. It covers the distance in 35 min and the fare is just Rs 5. Some 400 to 500 passengers travel on it every day. Introduced by the British in 1901-1903, the shuttle was meant to ferry goods and passengers as Konch was a big market for cotton, forest produce and ghee. The railway station at Konch exists only because of the shuttle but it is the pride of the locals who never travel on it ticketless for fear it may be stopped as it runs at a loss!
