They’ve done it for the second year in a row! Two competitors tied to win the 88th Scripps National Spelling Bee on May 28, 2015. Vanya Shivashankar (13) of Olathe, Kansas and Gokul Venkatachalam (14) of Chesterfield, Missouri were declared co-champions because like last year too, there were not enough words left on the competition’s list for them to keep facing off until only one was left standing. Vanya correctly spelled the word ‘scherenschnitte’ and Gokul correctly spelled the word ‘nunatak.’ Vanya is the only contestant at the 2015 Scripps National Spelling Bee who has been in the competition five times and the first sibling of a previous winner to take home the top prize. Her sister Kavya was the 2009 champion. In this year’s national championship, 285 spellers competed for the title. This was the eighth year in a row that the champion/s has been of Indian-American descent.
