Dr Sandeep Vaishya (b 8 July 1965) Director, Neurosurgery conducted the surgical removal of the largest meningomyelocele, measuring 60 cm x 50 cm with an overall circumference of 90 cm at Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, Haryana, on13 June 2016. The patient was Gurdeep Singh from Patiala, Punjab, who was born with a congenital defect of the spinal cord where there was an abnormal accumulation of the cerebrospinal fluid due to defective or incomplete spinal cord formation. He has been a paraplegic waist down with no control over his bowel and bladder since childhood. Close to seven litres of cerebrospinal fluid was drained out. The patient was discharged on 21 June 2016.
