Sometimes it seems every holiday and family event revolves around food. Cooking, selecting the perfect restaurant, meal planning, grocery shopping, etc. Father’s Day is no different. My favorite part? Creating a great home cooked meal with all of Dad’s favorite items.

With Father’s Day right around the corner, many of us are starting to plan the meals we’ll be preparing for Dad. When I think about my dad’s favorite food, I can’t help but think of the ultimate grill experience—burgers! What pairs better with beef than a little bacon? In my never-ending quest to jazz up grill meat, I decided to combine a favorite American classic Coca-Cola with favorite classic American foods: bacon and burgers. This resulted in slightly-sweetened and only mildly spicy candied bacon atop a gooey double cheeseburger. (My personal taste-testers have reported an “out of body experience” after trying these!)

What’s great about the Coca-Cola glaze is that you can pair it with just about any other grill item like roasted corn on the cob, ribs, chicken and pulled pork. (I suggest making a big batch and keeping it stored in the refrigerator to have on hand all summer long.)

This recipe includes what you will need to make enough four double cheeseburgers. I created double cheeseburgers for this recipe; however, this can easily be amended if you prefer to create singles.

  • 1.5 Cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 Cup Coca-Cola
  • 1 Pound bacon
  • 8 burger patties
  • 16 Slice American cheese
  • 4 burger buns
  • Cayenne pepper, to taste

  • Total Time: 1 hr
  • Prep Time: N/A
  • Cook Time: 1 hr
  1. In a medium pot, simmer the brown sugar with the Coca-Cola and a pinch of cayenne pepper for approximately 30-45 minutes. Make sure to stir periodically. Simmer until the glaze begins to thicken and then reduce. After the glaze begins to simmer, lightly brush it onto each slice of raw bacon. Cook bacon as you would normally. For maximum flavor, continue to baste the bacon as if cooks. The glaze will thicken up. As the bacon cools, it will become candied-like in texture. Prepare the burgers as your dad likes, and add cheese and optional toppings. If you choose, lightly drizzle any additional Coca-Cola glaze on top. Watch dad’s eyes light up as he takes that first scrumptious bite! Happy Father’s Day! Enjoy!
