Gujarat is endowed with 1,215 km of coastline, which is one-sixth the total length of the Indian coastline. The State has 42 ports, of which 41 are non-major, while Kandla (now Deendayal ) is the sole major port. Deendayal was the first port built after Independence. Its construction started in 1949 and it was commissioned on 8 April 1955. Deendayal Port handled 499.68 million tonnes of cargo traffic from April 2016 to January 2017. In the financial year 2017, the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) handled 345.73 million metric tonnes of cargo, with its capacity reaching 501 million metric tonnes in the same year. With seven ports already under construction and five proposed plans for ports, Gujarat has the highest number of privately operated greenfield ports in the country.
