To solve Osmanabad district’s perennial shortage of water, the zilla parishad and the entire administration along with school children, teachers, village elders and the community constructed 1,231 check dams and water harvesting structures on Oct 2, 2014. The greening and sustainable development of this drought-prone region of Maharashtra was carefully worked out by Suman Rawat, the IAS CEO of the Osmanabad zilla parishad. Using Gandhiji’s vision of gram swaraj, she motivated the administration as well as the community to come together with their financial contributions as well as labour to construct the structures. It was decided to harvest and hold every drop of the 738 mm rain the district receives between June and September. Filling up bags of sand and cement, children and adults constructed check dams to hold the water and ensure its percolation into the aquifers.
