The Ballooning Club of India, New Delhi, was inaugurated by cosmonaut Neil Armstrong in November 1970. Club president Vishwa Bandhu Gupta took the maiden flight with Jan Boesman and Nini Boesman in the gas balloon ‘Nimbus’ from Safdarjung Airport, New Delhi, to Kila Zafargarh, Haryana. India’s first step in the international forum was in February 1973, when Vishwa Bandhu Gupta participated in the First World Hot-Air Balloon Championship held at Albuquerque, New Mexico, US A. In October 1973, the first Indian hot-air balloon ‘Udan Khatola’ was designed and fabricated indigenously and test-flown successfully at Safdarjung Airport, New Delhi.
