Jagdish P Gandhi (74) of Mumbai, a Type 1 diabetic, has been insulin dependent for 54 years, ie, 1960 to 2014. He has had over 80,250 insulin injections administrated as of June 30, 2015. Originally five per day, he is now on seven and sometimes nine injections a day, depending on his blood glucose. He has also had seven major surgeries which included having a second pacemaker implanted. In spite of all this, he has travelled all over the world, spending most of his spare time giving lectures on Living with Diabetes. In 1984, the Diabetic Association of India awarded him a gold medal for being a diabetes survivor for over 25 years. He is the longest surviving type 1 diabetic. He is under the guidance of his doctor, diabetologist Dr Suresh Mehtalia.
