The oldest surviving gold coins are from the reign of Vima Kadphises (c.45-78 CE) struck in three denominations - the double stater, the stater or dinara,  and the quarter stater. On the obverse of these appears either the king's head or the bust, or the king seated cross-legged on a couch, or sitting in a chariot drawn by two horses.
