Atal Behari Bajpayee (1924-2018) made a speech in Hindi at the United Nations (UN) in 1977 when he was foreign minister, the first to ever do so. It was translated into English by an Indian diplomat. Vajpayee spoke again in Hindi in 1978. He later became the 10th Prime Minister of India in 1996 for 13 days, and then again from 1998- 2004.
