The first public theatre hall in India was the Star Theatre in Calcutta (now Kolkata), which was inaugurated on 21 July 1883 with the play Daksha Yajna. Among the first to produce plays at the Star Theatre was Girish Chandra Ghosh. The theatre shifted to its present site in Bidhan Sarani in 1888, and now mainly functions as a cinema hall with plays also being staged.
