Dr. Naresh Trehan (b. 12 August 1946), a cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgeon, performed the first successful heart-shrink surgery in Asia with his team of cardio-surgeons on a 50-year-old patient, Mani Ram Gurera, at the Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre, Delhi on 21 May 1996. The surgery, which involves removing a chunk of muscles from an enlarged heart, requires only one-tenth the expense of a heart transplant.
