The world's first dedicated educational satellite, EDUSAT 9 GSAT-3, was launched by the Indian Space Research Organization on 20 September 2004 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota at Andhra Pradesh. Then the heaviest satellite launched by an indigenously made rocket, it supports long-distance learning. It uses the virtual classroom concept to facilitate long-distance education in remote villages and areas without good technical institutes, besides adult literacy and teacher training programmes.
