Followig a fresh monitoring survey that pegs the number of the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins, also kown as Snubfin dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris), at 155, Chilika Lake has been found to be the largest home to them. It is Asia's largest brackish-water lagoon with an estuarine character, and one of India's first Ramsar Convention sites (wetlands of international importance). It gets freshwater from inland rivers and saline water from the Bay of Bengal, both contributing to the lagoon's rich biodiversity.
