In June 2015, an RTI reply admitting that Army dogs and horses are euthanized after retirement triggered a wave of protests from across the country, including online petitions. One such petition titled ‘Indian Army - Give them medals, not death sentences,’ was signed by over 20,000 people. Dogs are used for sentry duties, as sniffer dogs to detect explosives and for ceremonial work like at parades. The Army employs Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherd Dogs and Belgian Shepherds. Horses are used for ceremonial duties. Mules are used as pack animals.
