The 'Descent of the Ganga’ or ‘Arjuna’s Penance’ bas-relief at Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu, is 27m (88 ft) long and 9 m (29 ft) high. Created during the Pallava period in the 7th century CE, the gigantic work of art shows over 130 large and small sculptures of animals, humans, sages and gods.
