On Dec 11, 2014, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga (IDY) in honour of the ancient Indian tradition for unity of consciousness and body. The resolution for adoption of Yoga, moved by India, was co-sponsored by 175 nations, the highest number of co-sponsors ever in the UN for such a resolution. The first IDY was celebrated the world over on June 21, 2015 with Yoga-related activities such as yoga lectures, demonstrations, yoga meetings, yoga concerts, yogathons, yoga walks, screening of documentaries, photo exhibitions etc being organised in as many as 192 UN member countries.
In India, a number of Yoga events were conducted all over the country under the leadership of the Union Ministry of AYUSH. A massive Yoga demonstration, which had Prime Minister Modi and other dignitaries among the participants, was held at Rajpath, New Delhi in the morning.
