Mihir Sen (16 November 1930-11 June 1997) was the first Indian to swim several straits in one calendar year. He swam the Palk Strait (5-6 April), the Strait of Gibraltar (24 August), the Dardanelles (12 September), the Bosphorus (21 September) and the Panama Canal (29-30 October), all in 1966. He was the first non-American and third in the world to cross the Panama Canal and the first Indian to conquer the English Channel from Dover to Calais in 1958
