The Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai, Maharashtra, believed to have been built back to front, was founded by Jamshetji Nusserwanji Tata in 1904. In those days there were very few hotels that permitted entry to Indians and Jamshetji Tata himself had been denied admission to the Pyrke’s Apollo Hotel then situated close to the Taj. Jamshetji Tata died in 1903, before the completion of the hotel.
