Hukam Singh Lodha (63) of Bharatpur, Rajasthan developed Sitara Sringar, a high-yielding improved mustard variety through a five-year-long process of natural hybridisation from 2005-2010. The new variety is characterised with a high yield of 30-35 quintals per hectare, higher oil content of 42%, tolerance to pods shattering, water logging and resistance to leaf blight. At tests conducted at Rajasthan Agricultural Research Institute, Jaipur, the variety was found to be superior to all other check varieties of the crop. His innovation received the NIF Award (the National First under Plant Variety) in 2015.
