The Gorkha Regiment completed 200 years on April 24, 2015. The Regiment, raised in 1815 by the British East India Company (EIC) at Subathu in Himachal Pradesh, draws its troops from Gorkhas in India and Nepal. Subathu houses the 14 Gorkha Training Centre. The first Gorkha Regiment is now the Indian Army’s 1/1 GR or First Battalion. Although the troops are drawn from the Gorkhas, the Officers can be from anywhere in India. Chief of Army Staff General Dalbir Singh Suhag is a Gorkha Rifles Officer. The double centenary is also being observed by the British Brigade of Gorkhas which has Gorkha troops, the only non-British troops, in its command.
