K Sindhuraj of Kechery, Thrissur, Kerala has been protecting some 50 fruit bats in his house for 17 years. In the rainy season their number can go up to 100. They hang from the roof of his mini kitchen and the room next to it where the firewood is stored. He has not plastered or painted these areas. They are so comfortable in Sindhuraj’s home that they mate and reproduce in his storeroom! Though he has faced a lot of opposition and criticism for harbouring bats, he and his family have not been deterred. A tiny species called fulvous fruit bat weighing 45 to 105 grams, they feed on nectar and fruit juices.
