Kozhikode District Administration and Kerala Hotels and Restaurants Association have launched Operation Sulaimani that enables the needy to get a food coupon that can be exchanged for a meal at a hotel. The money for the project comes from the more affluent in society who put their contributions in donation boxes kept at various points. According to District Collector N Prasanth, Operation Sulaimani is modelled on ‘Coffee on Wall’ and ‘Food on the Wall’ systems existing in western countries where customers pay for an extra meal or coffee. More than 25 hotels in the city have come forward to join the project. The food coupons are distributed at villages, taluka offices and at select hostels near railway stations and bus stops and can be redeemed at hotels that are members of the project.
