INS Tarangini was commissioned on 11 November 1997 at Kochi harbour in Kerala on 24 April 2004, and became the first Naval ship to complete a voyage around the globe. The journey started from Kochi in January 2003. It visited more than 35 ports in 17 countries and covered a distance of 33,000 nautical miles. During a 15-month adventure-cumgoodwill cruise, IN S Tarangini took part in a series of tall ship regattas in the Great Lakes region of North America and won accolades for the country. The ship was flagged off by the Chief of Navy Staff Admiral Madhvendra Singh and was welcomed back by former President A.P.J. Kalam.
