In 1856, Captain Wood, Subedar Major Mohammed Sheriff and Sepoy Beer Bhut of Rajputana Rifles were recommended for the Victoria Cross (VC) for acts of valour at Reshire, Persia, but finally it was awarded only to Wood. The first Indian VC was Sepoy (later Subedar) Khuda Dad Khan of the 129 Baluchis for gallantry at Hollebeke, Belgium, on 31 October 1914 in World War I.
