Gauhar Jaan (1873–1930) was selected to sing when Fred Gaisburg decided to introduce gramophone in India with the first disc being cut in Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1902.The first singer to be recorded on the gramophone on Indian soil, she attended the recording session for a sum of Rs 3,000. Gauhar Jaan is rumoured to have recorded over 600 songs in seven different languages.
