In a novel governance initiative to take the government closer to the people, the newly elected Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Government of Delhi launched its first ‘Participatory Budget’ exercise at West Vinod Nagar in Patparganj on April 19, 2015. The event had Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, MLAs from the 11 nearby constituencies, top government officials including the Chief Secretary and the District Magistrate (East) and party leaders in attendance. The local people wrote down their suggestions for the kind of development they wanted in their area (and also the grievances) on sheets of paper and after a process of sifting through them a selected number (11) of issues were put to vote. The demand for a library received the maximum votes, followed by dispensary, road repair, CCTV and impounding of illegally parked vehicles. Later, similar events were conducted in other parts of the city.
