Indian athletes first participated in four events in Para-Sports at the 2006 Commonwealth Games (CWG) held in Melbourne, Australia from March 15-26, 2006. Ranjith Kumar Jayaseelan won a bronze medal, a first for India, in the discus throw event with a throw of 29.88 m.
Para-Sports first became part of the multi-sport event at the Commonwealth Games held in Manchester in 2002, where 10 events across five para-sports – Athletics, Lawn Bowls, Swimming, Table Tennis and Weightlifting – were included in the Games.
