On July 25, 2015, the heart of brain-dead Neelakantan Sharma was harvested at Sree Chitra Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, transported by a Naval Dornier air ambulance and successfully transplanted in Mathew Achadan (47) of Chalakudi after a six-hour surgery. The air journey took about 40 minutes. Cardiologist Dr Jose Periyappuram led a team of doctors for the procedure at Lissie Hospital in Kochi.
