Radio Active CR 90.4 MHz, an urban community station under the JGI Group in Bengaluru launched the Radio Mathematics series on Nov 1, 2014. The Radio Mathematics Project was awarded to them by the National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC), Dept of Science & Technology, Govt of India. First a baseline survey was conducted from Sept 24 – Oct 4, 2014. Then, focus group discussions were held and based on them it was decided that the target audience would be domestic workers in the 18-40 age group and the programme would be in four segments – Atta Patta, Nana Ganitheda Katha (My Mathematics Stories), Arya Bhatta the radio serial and Question of the Day.
Set in Byrasandra Jayanagar East, Arya Bhatta’s story revolving around the journey of Arya, the daughter of a domestic worker Mangala and her tryst with mathematics, was covered in the 180- episode long series broadcast every alternate day between 2.30 to 3.00 pm. My Mathematics Stories is about 500 domestic workers who share their mathematics stories. Atta Patta, features Rani the dog solving mathematics puzzles through storytelling and games along with Lavanya.
