Varkey Thomman (77), an innovative farmer from Idukki, Kerala developed an improved extra-large nutmeg variety called Punnathanam Jathy through selection from a local variety in 1994. He achieved it through years of observation and experiments involving several rounds of propagation through nutmeg kernels. The average size of the fruit is 4.5×3 cm and a single tree produces an average of 3,000 fruits a year. His innovation won the NIF Award (National Third – Plant Variety) in 2015.
