Therukoothu, a form of theatre believed to have originated in 200 BCE –200 CE , in ancient Tamilakam, literally means ‘street play’. It was actually performed on streets on an improvised stage with very few properties and hardly any special costumes. Themes were taken from the epics. Therukoothu as well as some other forms of street plays like Pallu, Kuravanji and Nandinatakam are still performed in South India.
