The largest and the oldest collection of rock paintings in India have been found at Bhimbetka near Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. The paintings in these 700 Neolithic rock shelters depict the everyday lives of the people such as, hunting, dancing, decoration of bodies, among other details. In some of the caves, popular religious and ritualistic symbols have also been discovered. The earliest paintings are pictures of animals like bisons, bears and tigers.
