Kuchipudi, the classical dance form from Andhra Pradesh, is named after the village Kuchipudi in the Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh. Kuchipudi itself is a shortened form of Kuchelapuram or Kuchilapuri, which in turn is believed to have originated from Kuseelavapuri – the abode of the Kuseelavas. Kuseelavas were bands of actors wandering from place to place. A product of the Bhakti movement, Kuchipudi was created by Teerthanarayana and Siddhendra, two great sages belonging to the period, who combined music, dance and drama to expound the teachings of the epics and the Puranas.
