INS Visakhapatnam, the lead ship of the four-ship latest Project 15B line of the Navy’s Stealth Guided Missile Destroyers, was launched from Mazagon Dock in Mumbai on April 20, 2015. It was designed at the Directorate of Naval Design in Delhi and the keel was laid on Oct 12, 2013. The 163 m-long new generation destroyer can operate under nuclear, biological and chemical strikes. It is armed with 32 Barak-8 long range SAM missiles, bow-mounted sonar to detect submarines, 16 BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and an Ellora early warning system.
