Susamma Itty Varghese (69), Ancherrymadathil, Kottayam, Kerala has been nurturing small-leaved hedge plants (phyllanthus) on either side of the 110 m stretch of the driveway to her residence for the past nine years. The number of animal formations and patterns on the hedges has increased to 145 from 141 last year. Susamma maintains the hedges single-handedly, without the help of any labourers. Her garden also has 76 stands of aloe vera, two of which have grown 3.26 m tall. Twice in a year the aloe vera bear bright, yellow flowers. Aloe vera has medicinal value and is used as a health supplement.
