The ghatam or mud pot, still in vogue in Carnatic concerts, is mentioned in the Ramayana. It remained in folk music for centuries and was elevated to concert status by maestro Palani Krishnayyer (1876–1908), who was presented a gold bracelet for his virtuosity in Madras on 17 October 1897. This tradition continued with maestros like Kodandarama Iyer and Vikku Vinayakram.
