Akash Weapon System, the indigenously developed surface-to-air missile which is part of the integrated guided missile development programme launched in 1984, joined the Indian Army on May 5, 2015. The supersonic short range missile can target enemy aircraft, sub-sonic cruise missiles and UAVs within 25 km and up to an altitude of 20 km. In the custody of Air Defence Corps, the missile system is 96% indigenous. Mounted on vehicles, it can be moved to suit operational needs.
