A 23-km walk over 4-5 days along the frozen Zanskar river was keeping children of Lingshed and surrounding areas from going to a better school in Leh till the Indian Air Force’s Siachen Pioneers stepped in. Now the 40-odd children of this area get a helicopter ride to Leh at the start of each school session and then a ride back home at the end of the term. Air Force men had actually made the 23-km Chadar trek to understand what it took for the people of Lingshed to reach Leh before providing the helicopter service! Lingshed, 12,000 ft above sea level, is primarily occupied by herdsmen and between November and June the rising snow cuts off the village from the mainland, blocking access to Leh and Kargil.
