The Rajnat community of Rajasthan which has been struggling to give up prostitution has been able to elect a woman as Sarpanch of Jaisinghpura, a reserved post for a woman. The eligibility criteria for the post of sarpanch is class 8 pass and Ranjana Kamdhar having completed her class 12 was well qualified for the job.
The ‘Rajnats’ or ‘Nats’ were dancers and singers in the royal courts but were reduced to penury and took to prostitution with the decline of the feudal order. Ranjana’s priority is education for girls because she thinks it can bring about a major social change.
