Kolkata Little Magazine and Research Centre (Kolikata Little Magazine Library O Gobesshona Kendro), a privately owned library of alternative and experimental literary magazines, was founded by Sandip Dutta on June 23, 1978 with a small number of periodicals. While he was a student majoring in Bengali Literature, Sandip was horrified at the utter neglect and poor maintenance of periodicals at the National Library. He decided to establish a library dedicated solely to the purpose of collecting and preserving little magazines and thus was born the library initially called Library and Laboratory for Bengali Little Magazines in two rooms of the ground floor of his ancestral home in North Kolkata. Funded entirely from his own private funds, there are almost 60,000 experimental, radical, alternative and avant-garde periodicals and little magazines in Bengali, English and Hindi in the collection today. There are over 4,000 books and some rare out-of-print periodicals in the library. Subjects range from literature to broader disciplines of social science and humanities. Currently, the library has over 150 members (including poet Joy Goswami and author Mahasweta Devi) and 10-12 visitors visit the library on a daily basis.
